Newport child dies from alleged abuse, father arrested

NEWPORT, Ark. – A child is dead, and the father is in custody after an investigation by Newport police.

According to investigators, Ranterious Alexander of West Memphis has been arrested in the death of a five-week-old infant from Newport.

Investigators said the child was flown to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock on Tuesday after receiving reports of possible child abuse at a Newport home, but the child died on Saturday from injuries.

Police said Alexander, the child’s father, was interviewed as part of the investigation and that he admitted to multiple acts of abuse against the infant since birth.

Investigators said that the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has been notified and will be responsible for all charging decisions moving forward.
