RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A firefighter was shot while responding to a fire alarm in Richmond County early Monday morning, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Around 4:30 a.m., the Richmond County Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on Green Lake Road in Ellerbe. During the response, crews were met with gunfire and a firefighter was shot. They were airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill for treatment, officials said.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and eventually arrested the suspect, Timothy Lee Hayden. He was charged with two counts of assault on emergency personnel with a firearm and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Arrest records show he is being held in the Richmond County Jail without bond and has an initial court appearance scheduled for September 11.

This is still an active investigation by the sheriff’s office and the NCSBI.
