Portland City Councilor Mitch Green on ‘Peacock’ coalition, communication controversy

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland’s new 12-person City Council is now about eight months into their term. With that many councilors on board, it’s no surprise that coalitions would form.

Recently, Willamette Week’s Sophie Peel opened our eyes to a group of six councilors who call themselves “Peacock,” short for “progressive caucus.”

The members are Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy, plus four self-described democratic socialists: Sameer Kanal, Tiffany Koyama Lane, Angelita Morillo and Mitch Green.

But as they team up to take on big issues, their communications have come under scrutiny.

Councilor Green, an economist and senior risk analyst at the Bonneville Power Administration, represents Portland’s downtown and the west side in District 4.

Green joined Eye on Northwest Politics to talk about the Peacock coalition and the controversy.
