CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An investigation is underway after a man was found dead in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, a detention officer was conducting routine checks during breakfast when they found the man unresponsive. Lifesaving measures were performed until Medic arrived; however, the 62-year-old inmate was pronounced dead, officials said.

MCSO staff said they have no next of kin to contact because the man was classified as unhoused when he was arrested in June 2025 and October 2024.

“I have the unfortunate duty of announcing the death of a resident within our facility. A loss of life is never easy, and once we can notify their family, we will extend our deepest sympathies to them during this difficult time,” Sheriff McFadden said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating while the medical examiner determines the cause of death.
