According to Merced CHP, around 12:25 a.m. they responded to reports of a man who was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene on Highway 99, south of Westside Boulevard.
Responding officers reported finding a 34-year-old man from Atwater lying in the No. 2 lane of northbound Highway 99. Life-saving efforts were administered, but the man succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators report the man was walking on the highway for unknown reasons as a vehicle headed north in the No. 2 lane of the highway at an unknown rate of speed. The vehicle struck the pedestrian, who sustained fatal injuries, and continued northbound.
The victim in this crash has not yet been identified.
The California Highway Patrol is actively searching for the vehicle involved in this crash and ask anyone who may have information to contact Officer Jennifer Simmons at 209-356-6600 or after hours at 209-356-2900.
