The festival is put on by Africa International House, which has a mission “to serve as a center that exposes and educates all peoples to the individual works and collective contributions of African cultures,” according to its website.
The African Festival of the Arts began Saturday and continues through Monday at Sunken Gardens in Washington Park, located at 5500 South Cottage Grove Avenue. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Music performances blending R&B, funk, soul, jazz and brass begin at 4 p.m. Sunday and at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The festival also includes an African marketplace with vendors and artisans, authentic food, activities for families and children, and cultural villages highlighting the richness of African heritage.
Organizers say some vendors travelled all the way from Kenya and Nigeria to be in Chicago this weekend.
“It’s a beautiful weekend. You see all cultures,” Linda Henley, a festival volunteer, said. “Everybody walks through here. Everyone loves the African Festival, because they know it’s a good time.”
