We are currently nearing the end of the 100 Deadliest Days, the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic fatalities usually rise as more people are out on the road enjoying their summers.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) released initial information on roadway deaths this year and over the summer, and the total number of summer crashes has reached a 10-year low.
So far this year, traffic fatalities have gone down 10%, and summer fatalities are down 18%. As we head into Labor Day weekend, officials are urging Utahns to stay safe on the roads this holiday. Labor Day is one of the busiest weekends of the year for traffic.
Despite this encouraging news, motorcyclist fatalities are up 36% this summer, and most of the crashes have involved other vehicles. Statewide data shows that speed, negotiating curves, and motorcycles turning left have been factors in these crashes.
Jason Mettman, DPS communications manager, said that motorcycle riders can protect themselves by wearing gear, sharpening their skills, and riding defensively. Car drivers also have a role to play in preventing tragedies; they need to stay alert and give motorcycles space.
In July, DPS reported an all-time high for motorcycle fatalities, at 14 deaths in one month. They also reported that only 10% of motorcycle riders in the state have ever taken a skills course, and only 36% of motorcycle riders have a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license.
UDOT and DPS reminded the public to focus on safety basics over Labor Day: wear a seatbelt, follow the speed limit, drive sober, and stay alert.
