A cheer and a touchdown are what the Mount Diablo Red Devils are familiar with.
However, what’s not familiar is that they are playing what was supposed to be their first home game of the season at Concord High School.
Mount Diablo High School Principal Dr. Marqell McCain said it’s the silver lining for the Mount Diablo junior varsity and varsity teams.
“We’re all the same community, same families, same kids. So, when somebody is in need, this is what you to do — you lend a hand,” said Dr. McCain. “We’re thankful to Concord High School to let us borrow their field. This is what we would do. We would do the same thing.”
A fire last week scorched Mount Diablo High School’s brand-new football field. It’s unknown how long it will take to fix it.
In the meantime, the community has rallied to support players, like varsity quarterback Michael Vasquez.
“I see a lot of familiar faces, especially from school. Teachers, parents all came to support us, which is good,” said Vasquez.
Vasquez said he and his teammates are staying focused on what they do know. “Just keep being us, you know. Don’t let outside things change who we are and as long as we remain us and stay as a team, nothing can stop us.”
Varsity co-head coach Marcus Moore said the team’s goal is to channel the frustration into wins.
“They’re excited now to do something that actually counts, that matters,” said Coach Moore. “It’s starting off their varsity careers for some, it’s finishing off their varsity careers for others. So now it’s just we’re here. No matter where ‘here’ is, we’re here and we’re going to be loud while we’re here.”
Mount Diablo High School is currently looking for the next school to offer up a field for next weekend’s games. They say they’re taking it one day at a time.
