IndyGo announces 2 closures on Washington Street

INDIANAPOLIS — Due to IndyGo’s ongoing construction of the Blue Line, two parts of Washington Street will be closed in the coming weeks.

Closure 1

Starting on Tuesday, the first closure will be on Washington Street from Belmont Street to Harding Street. This construction will last for about six months.

Westbound lanes between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street will be closed to through traffic. Drivers headed westbound will have to detour around by using Harding Street, I-70 and Holt Road. One eastbound lane will stay open, which serves to keep access to residences and businesses on Washington Street open.

All westbound bus stops in the construction area will be closed, temporary stops will be put in place near the intersection of Washington and Harding streets, and the intersection of Washington Street and Belmont Avenue. 

Closure 2

The second closure is the intersection of Washington Street and Sherman Drive, also starting on Tuesday, and will last about two weeks.

Westbound traffic will be diverted to Emerson Avenue and eastbound traffic will detour around the closure on Southeastern Avenue. Traffic headed northbound will be diverted from Southeastern Avenue to Emerson Avenue, while southbound traffic will be detoured around the closure using Emerson Avenue.

All bus stops along Washington Street, between Sherman Drive and Emerson Avenue, will be closed. Temporary stops will be placed at Gale and Washington streets, and at Julian and Emerson avenues. 

The Blue Line will run for 24 miles and connect the Indianapolis International Airport to the Town of Cumberland via downtown Indianapolis along I-70, Holt Road and Washington Street. The line is expected to open for service in 2028.
