(FOX40.COM) — The White House Office of Management and Budget reinstated funding to AmeriCorps despite its plan to eliminate nearly 90% of AmeriCorps’ workforce on Friday, according to the California Attorney General’s Office.

In April, Attorney General Rob Bonta led a coalition to challenge OMB contracts and its decision to close $400 million worth of AmeriCorps-supported programs, officials said. In June, Bonta and the coalition secured a court order reinstating hundreds of AmeriCorps programs.

After Bonta recently filed an amended lawsuit, the Trump administration informed the court that OMB would release all withheld AmeriCorps funds, totaling over $184 million, the attorney general’s office said.

“AmeriCorps volunteers represent the best of who we are as a country,” Bonta said.

California is set to receive $11.5 million in funding that AmeriCorps plans to award to service programs across the country, Bonta said. AmeriCorps provides aid to programs like Prevent Child Abuse California, Partnership for Veterans and People Experiencing Homelessness, and Reading Partners California.

In 2024, AmeriCorps invested more than $133 million in federal funding in California, according to the attorney general’s office. That same year, more than 6,150 Californians served at least 1,200 locations, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans’ facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.
