Delta pilot and ex-girlfriend charged with child sex crimes appear in court
Rustom Bhagwagar and his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Powell were both flanked by their attorneys during their preliminary hearing Friday at the A.F. Bray Courts Building in Martinez.
Judge Julia Campins presided over the proceedings.
After the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the defense presented their sides,
Judge Campins found sufficient evidence for both defendants to stand trial on all 24 counts.
Prosecutors allege the victim — identified in court as Jane Doe — claims the abuse happened while she was between 6 and 11-years-old. Both Powell and Bhagwagar allegedly participated in the abuse, which allegedly included oral sex and sexual intercourse in Contra Costa County.
Attorneys say the two defendants were a couple when the alleged abuses occurred. The lone witness to take the stand was an investigator with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office who worked with Powell to ultimately facilitate Bhagwagar’s arrest after he landed a flight at San Francisco International Airport last month.
Attorneys say Bhagwagar and Powell were estranged for at least year before Jane Doe reported her case to the sheriff’s office. Bhagwagar and Powell’s arraignments have been scheduled for Sept. 16.
Both will in the meantime be held at the Martinez Detention Facility with bail set at $15 million.
