Police say the victims were found inside an apartment building in the 7700 block of South Essex, in South Shore, just before midnight, as officers were responding to a report of a person shot in the area.
While it is unclear if the shooting unfolded in the area, officers said when they arrived at the building, they found an open door. After announcing their arrival, they went inside and found the two victims, a 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman who had both suffered gunshot wounds.
The 25-year-old woman was later taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, while the 23-year-old woman remains in fair condition.
Officers say they spoke with a person of interest in connection with the incident, but no arrests have been made.
Currently, it is unclear what led to the shooting or if it unfolded at the apartment building.
Authorities have not identified the victim killed.
