The company discovered the breach two days after it occurred and promptly initiated written notifications to all affected consumers on August 26, 2025.
To mitigate potential harm, TransUnion is offering complimentary credit monitoring services for two years through its myTrueIdentity Online platform.
On July 28, 2025, TransUnion’s security team detected anomalous activity suggesting that an unauthorized party had accessed databases containing personal identifiers.
By July 30, 2025, a full investigation confirmed the breach had compromised names combined with other personal identifiers, though specific details on the additional data types were not disclosed in the notification.
The rapid discovery followed industry best practices for breach detection, enabling TransUnion’s in-house privacy counsel, Senior Privacy Counsel Sanjana Palla, to submit the formal notification to Maine’s Attorney General.
The incident underscores the ongoing threat to consumer reporting agencies, which store sensitive consumer data that can be exploited for identity theft.
Of the total affected individuals, just under 17,000 are Maine residents.
Because this number exceeds 1,000, TransUnion confirmed that it has notified relevant consumer reporting agencies as required under Maine law.
The notice to Maine residents included a link to the U.S. Adult Consumer Letter detailing recommended steps to safeguard personal information and the availability of identity theft protection services.
