EUNICE, La. (
KLFY) — In Eunice, funding from the state is leading towards progress as key areas of the city will be receiving some much-needed renovations.
This includes the Eunice Municipal Complex, which holds the city hall, the city jail and the police department all receiving renovations for the first time since the building’s construction nearly 50 years ago.
“We’re lucky to announce that we did receive a $1.3 million,” said Mayor Scott Fontenot. “And that’s going to do some energy efficiency work on the building, some work to the police department itself, the jail and the security to enhance for our patrons and our employees.”
Fontenot says the over $1 million in funding will not only improve the quality of the building but also the security and quality of the city jail, bringing the building into the modern age after being built in 1979.
Also receiving renovations is the Liberty Theater, which has stood in Eunice and been a staple of the community for over 100 years.
“They’re still in the process of picking up some more cash. But things are moving along, and hopefully within the next 12 months or so, you’re going to see some major progress happening,” Fontenot said.
With all of these renovations coming to the city, the mayor says the most important thing is that the history of Eunice will be preserved for years to come.
“We have to preserve our history and our on our structures and our buildings and our infrastructure,” said Fontenot. “In my opinion, I wish we could have preserved the old City Hall because I’m a type of a historian where I love old buildings, but this building is still worth it and to invest in so and that’s what we’re doing.”
