Vibrio vulnificus has been around for decades, but Dr. Malek says they’re seeing a growing number of infections.
“Over the past year, we’ve noticed an increase and uptick of cases over the past year, mainly in the Gulf, coastal towns where it’s close to salty, warm water or brackish water,” said Alexandre Malek, MD, MPH, Infectious disease specialist at LSU Health Shreveport.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says Vibrio vulnificus is a bacteria that naturally live in coastal areas and is more prevalent during times when the waters are warmer. Eating shellfish that is raw or undercooked can cause vibriosis if infected with these bacteria.
Vibrosis can also occur when coastal water gets into an open wound.
“Noticing more and more cases over the past year, whether through people who get sick and get admitted to the hospital, and, for now, we have had like six people die over the coastal towns and the gulf area,” said Dr. Malek.
Malek said the safest thing to do was to avoid the bacteria by eating oysters and shellfish that are properly cooked.
“Avoid eating raw oyster just to be on the safe side or avoid eating undercooked oyster or other seafood,” said Dr. Malek.
People with underlying health conditions are at higher risk.
“Very common, we see people with diabetes, uncontrolled diabetes, that could put them at a higher risk of fatal and life-threatening infection,” said Dr. Malek.
Experts say infections can start with an upset stomach or skin infections and can spread pretty quickly. If you experience these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.
“This infection has been there for decades, for years, but the striking for, recently, we’ve been noticing more and more cases over the past year,” said Dr. Malek.
