Progress made on Salt Lake City Temple assembly room, sealing wing, and historic carving

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced progress made on renovations for the Salt Lake Temple for the month of August.

This month, the historic “Holiness to the Lord” panel was restored, scaffolding was removed from the assembly room, and progress was made on the addition of the north sealing wing.

According to a news release from the Church, Anne Domenech, an artist with Evergreen, oversaw the regilding of the “Holiness to the Lord” panel, reapplying gold leaf to the panel. The panel is located above the east center tower, below the statue of the angel Moroni.

Domenech said that the most technical part was cleaning the surface of the plaque before reapplying the gold. The panel is outside, weather conditions change, and the sun interfered with the drying process, so it was a careful process.

The historic panel was carved by stonecutter John Rowe Moyle in the 1800s after he suffered a severe leg injury that required amputation.

This month, scaffolding was also removed from the assembly room on the fifth floor of the temple. With the scaffolding removed, all that remains is finishing work.

Finally, significant process was made on the north sealing wing addition. This addition adds more sealing rooms, increasing the capacity of the temple. Chandeliers were installed, altars are being gilded, and stonework and window trim were placed.
