The man bought two tickets at two different locations, winning $500,000 for both Powerball tickets.
Donnie Arrington is a Landover resident who said he is excited for the winner and his family.
“I am excited for that individual to tell you the truth, and what makes it exciting is that someone in Maryland won something, and that’s my excitement,” Arrington said.
Many like Arrington were trying their luck Thursday afternoon at the Landover Hills Exxon market. Workers were busy all day selling Powerball tickets to customers like Markell Robinson.
“I hope I get lucky like that man did, winning a million. I would try to build my wealth, I would try to start my own business and things like that, and of course, pay some bills and help some people, but start some businesses,” Robinson said.
The lucky winner purchased a Powerball ticket at the Landover Hills store and bought another one down the road at a business in Riverdale. The manager at the Landover store said he used the same numbers; one ticket included a double play option.
Arrington said if he is lucky enough to win the lottery, he would help his family and the community with his winnings.
“I have a large family, and that would be a big issue with me. And thank God that money is not everything to me, and if I won, my goals would be to give a huge percentage back to the community,” he said.
The Powerball jackpot has grown to $950 million.
