Friday morning, a judge denied bond for Decarlos Brown after the victim’s family pleaded for Brown to remain in jail.
Brown is accused of killing Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old woman who left Ukraine for the Charlotte area three years ago to escape her country’s war with Russia.
The uncle of the victim spoke in court Friday, telling the judge he did not want the suspect to be a “menace” to others and possibly hurt someone else.
Her uncle told the judge she was a “sweet angel,” and the accused took a “bright, beautiful” woman away from their family, and “they’re heartbroken.”
Records show that Brown has a violent criminal history, including prison time for robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony breaking and entering.
The judge said that because of his prior criminal history and the “heinous” nature of the crime, he denied bond for Brown.
The defense attorney informed the judge that he plans to file a motion for a mental competency evaluation for Brown in this case.
