Garnet Fire grows, prompts local emergency declaration

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A fast-moving wildfire in the Sierra Nevada has prompted multiple evacuation orders and a local state of emergency, as the Garnet Fire continues to burn out of control with zero containment.

As of Tuesday, the fire had scorched thousands of acres, fueled by dense, dry vegetation and downed trees left behind by the region’s bark beetle epidemic.

“Those trees were killed during the bug kill. They’re now lying on the ground. They burn very readily, very hot… and they carry fire very well,” said Adrienne Freeman, a public information officer with the U.S. Forest Service.

Avocado Lake transformed into Firefighter Base Camp

The U.S. Forest Service has established a full-scale incident command post at Avocado Lake near Sanger.

More than 1,000 firefighters will be based at Avocado Lake.

The lake will remain closed to the public for the next two weeks as it serves as a critical operations hub for crews battling the blaze.

“We’re just finishing setting up Avocado as an incident command post. That incident command post will house a majority of the firefighters,” said Edward Dula, PIO for the U.S. Forest Service. “We’ll give them places to sleep, feed them, give them showers—give them all the support they need to successfully fight that fire.”

Emergency Declared as Infrastructure Threatened

Fresno County officials formally declared a local state of emergency, citing the escalating threat to public safety and vital infrastructure.

“This allows for us to receive 90% reimbursement back for our costs,” said Nathan Magsig, Fresno County supervisor for District 5.

Among the top concerns is PG&E’s power transmission infrastructure, which lies in the path of the fire.

“The biggest threat is to that PG&E infrastructure. We want to make sure we keep that safe,” Freeman added.

Other Fires Emerge Nearby

In addition to the Garnet Fire, nine other fires have been reported in the surrounding forest. Officials are urging the public to use extreme caution when using outdoor equipment, particularly in dry, grassy areas.

Campfires, towing chains, fireworks, and even lawn equipment can spark new wildfires, officials warned.

With hot and dry weather in the forecast, crews are hoping for a break in conditions to gain the upper hand.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for several communities. Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts and have evacuation plans in place.
