Sheriff Sam Craft said Michael Wallin, 36, was arrested Aug. 22 on four counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. He remains in the Vernon Parish Jail with bond not yet set.
The investigation began Aug. 15 when the Vernon Parish Department of Child and Family Services reported an abuse complaint. Detectives learned a 3-month-old infant had been taken to a local hospital and diagnosed with brain bleeding. The child was later transferred to a Shreveport facility for advanced treatment, where physicians also discovered fractured ribs in various stages of healing. Medical personnel classified the injuries as non-accidental trauma.
Wallin initially told hospital staff the child had fallen out of a bouncy chair, but doctors said the explanation did not match the extent of the injuries. During an interview with detectives, Wallin admitted to shaking the child on four occasions.
The infant remains in critical condition at a Shreveport hospital.
