Andre Holland, an actor from Bessemer known for his roles in “The Knick” and “Moonlight,” and Roy Wood Jr., a Birmingham standup comic who has appeared in “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” and hosts the American version of “Have I Got News for You” on CNN, both star in “Love Brooklyn,” directed by Rachael Abigail Holder that premieres Friday, but will go into wide release Sept. 5, including in Birmingham.
“A writer (André Holland, Moonlight) navigates complicated relationships with his ex, an art gallery owner (Nicole Beharie, The Morning Show), and his current lover, a newly-single mother (DeWanda Wise, She’s Gotta Have It), with the support of his best friend (Roy Wood Jr., The Daily Show). A modern romance set against the rapidly changing landscape of Brooklyn, New York,” a summary from studio Greenwich Entertainment read.
As their careers have risen over the years, both Holland and Wood have been quick to give back to Alabama. Holland and his family currently own the Lincoln Theatre in Bessemer with plans to renovate it and turn it into a creative artistic space. Wood frequently comes back to Birmingham, where he has donated money to his alma mater, Ramsay High School.
“So much of who I am is shaped by what I am doing in Bessemer,” Holland told CBS 42 back in 2020. “The least I can do is to repay that to the people who are coming up behind me.”
“Love Brooklyn” will premiere at the Sidewalk Film Center Sept. 5 and the Capri Theatre in Montgomery Sept. 12.
