According to Dawson Springs Independent School System Superintendent Leonard Whalen, at 9 a.m., an upper elementary student reported a classmate had a gun in their locker.
The principal and assistant principal responded and found the toy gun. During questioning, officials state the student had a much younger sibling at home who put the gun in the bag, and it wasn’t known until the student got to the school.
Whalen says as the student was getting items out of the bag at their locker, the gun was found and placed in the locker.
Whalen states the investigation is ongoing, and dealing with the student will be by following code of conduct protocols.
Whalen also wants to emphasize that it is believed there was never an intentional threat to harm or hurt anyone, and the number one priority is the safety and security of students and staff.
