Scioto County deputies preparing for Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement blitz

David Thoroughman, Scioto County Sheriff, says the effort is part of a traffic enforcement blitz to combat impaired driving over the holiday weekend. He says that through Sept. 1, they will have additional deputies on the roadway to work traffic enforcement.

“A safe environment for residents and visitors of our county will always be a focus for the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office,” said Thoroughman. “Coordinated efforts with other law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders to stop deaths associated with impaired driving continues to be a main focus for our deputies.”

The sheriff says the funding for the extra hours on the clock comes from a grant through the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

“Impaired driving remains a leading cause of preventable crashes and loss of life. Ohio saw a 13% increase in alcohol-impaired driving in fatal crashes from 2023 through 2024,” Thoroughman said.

Thoroughman urges drivers to stay safe, buckle up and obey traffic laws while out enjoying the Labor Day weekend. He adds that if you do see an impaired driver, contact 911 when you can safely do so.
