Man who sodomized 11-year-old girl caught after fleeing to Mexico, receives 38-year sentence

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 53-year-old man who sexually abused an 11-year-old girl over a dozen times was sentenced to 38 years in prison on Monday, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office announced.

Edgar Ocampo-Reza was found guilty on 12 counts of first-degree sodomy and 24 counts of first-degree sex abuse in a week-long trial earlier in August.

“Justice in this case was long overdue. At every turn, the defendant tried to avoid being held accountable for his crimes. This verdict is a testament to the courage, strength, and perseverance of the victim and her friends – at eleven years of age – to speak up. At sentencing, the victim spoke eloquently about the lasting impact of the defendant’s crimes. This is why, as a community who cares about the safety and well-being of children, we should never give up in our efforts to hold accountable people who have committed crimes like these,” said Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Charles Mickley.

The 11-year-old victim disclosed the abuse to her friends in May of 2016, before telling a school counselor that the abuse had been happening for years. Officials said that the abuse took place on Saturdays when the victim’s mom was at work.

“These powerful disclosures of abuse were later corroborated by DNA evidence obtained from the SAFE kit, which showed the presence of male DNA. Meanwhile, Ocampo-Reza fled to Mexico soon after being alerted that the victim had disclosed being abused. Prosecutors in Multnomah County worked with local and international investigators to track down Ocampo-Reza and bring him back to Oregon to face justice,” officials said.
