In response to a rise in scams targeting Baxter County residents, KTLO will host Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery on Thursday morning for a live call-in program to give the public an opportunity to ask questions and learn how to protect themselves.

The program will begin at 9:05 on KTLO FM 97.9 and will also be streamed at KTLO.com. Questions can be submitted during the live call in by calling 870-425-5522 or preceding the program by email at news@ktlo.com

Last week, KTLO News reported on a joint law enforcement operation in Baxter County that led to the arrests of three men accused of acting as “money mules” for overseas scam operations targeting local residents.

Federal agencies across the country have reported a significant uptick in scams affecting Americans this year. Scammers frequently target older adults using fear, urgency or trust to steal money or personal information. Common schemes include government officials or tech support; fake sweepstakes, investments or charities; romance scams that invent emergencies; and home repair or health care fraud. Criminals may also use phishing emails, check fraud, robocalls or spoofed phone numbers to appear legitimate.

For those unable to tune in live a recording of the program will be posted to KTLO.com following the conclusion of the call in.
