Fountain City Classic launch Close the Gap campaign to support students and band programs

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) The Fountain City Classic announced on Wednesday the launch of their “Close the Gap” campaign, a fundraising initiative to help college students in band programs.

According to the FCC, the fundraising initiative aims to eliminate the financial barriers for college students and strengthening the legacy of marching band programs.

The campaign kicks off Thursday, with a goal to raise $35,000, leading up to the 35th Annual Fountain City Classic football game on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025.

Funds raised will establish the Fountain City Classic Cares Fund, which will provide emergency assistance to students facing unexpected financial challenges, ensuring they can continue their educational journey.

“The Fountain City Classic has always been bigger than the football game itself, it is about higher education, scholarship opportunities, and community pride.” said FCC Chairman Calvin Smyre. “This year, as we celebrate 35 years, we are widening that commitment by investing directly into our students and bands. The ‘Close the Gap’ campaign will open doors for students and ensure the sounds and traditions that make the Classic so special continue for generations to come.”

Part of the funds will also support high school band programs through the FCC’s new tradition The Battle of the Drumline.

The competition allows high school drumlines within a 100-mile radius to submit performance videos for consideration. If selected, groups will be featured in the FCC pre-game show and compete for a $2,500 cash prize to support their music program.

In addition, the FCC will introduce an opportunity for students to participate in halftime competitions, where they can showcase their talent and compete for scholarship funds.

“Our goal of $35,000 will launch The Fountain City Classic Cares Fund, help high school bands shine through the Battle of the Drumline, and create new scholarship opportunities for our students,” said Executive Director of the Fountain City Classic Robbie Branscomb. “The bands truly are the heartbeat of HBCU culture and the Classic itself. By inviting high school students into this experience, we’re giving them a chance to feel that magic and be part of the legacy.”

Branscomb continued, “We all know a student who has worked tirelessly to get into college, only to be stopped by an unexpected bill. ‘Close the Gap’ is about opening doors, removing barriers, and ensuring that the spirit of the Classic continues for another 35 years and beyond.”

The FCC Committee invites the entire community to get involved by donating, sharing the campaign, submitting drumline entries, or attending the 35th Annual Fountain City Classic.

The game will be at the A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.
