Boat driver dead after suffering medical emergency, crashing into Leech Lake shore

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said a boater was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon after reportedly crashing into rocks along the shoreline at Leech Lake.

Around 1:25 p.m., callers told the sheriff’s office they had seen a boat crash into the south shore of the lake near Walker City Park.

When first responders arrived, they found a crashed 2016 Regency Tri-toon and a 59-year-old woman inside the boat, unresponsive.

The woman was later declared dead while being transported to the Walker airport; she was the only occupant of the boat when it crashed.

On Thursday, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Theresa Kay Cechini of Cass Lake.

Following an autopsy, the sheriff’s office also announced Cechini had suffered a medical emergency before the crash.
