KANSAS CITY, Kan. — People who live and work in Kansas City, Kansas’ Strawberry Hill neighborhood and beyond are encouraged to display a blue ribbon outside of their homes and businesses.

The action is to show support for KCKPD Officer Hunter Simoncic, his family and his KCK law enforcement colleagues.

Thursday, several mostly residential streets in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood were lined with them, as dozens were tied around light and utility poles.

“It is a small gesture, but a very powerful and unifying one,” the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department shared online.

The Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Association President, Rose Eilts, says it’s to let law enforcement members know the community cares about them.

“We did it, unfortunately, a month ago too,” Elits said.

“It’s been a tough time for Wyandotte County.”

This gesture is also something the area did around a month ago for Wyandotte County Deputy Elijah Ming, too.

“I think it just shows our respect, and it is amazing how everybody recognizes what it’s for, and I think they appreciate the sentiment. Kind of helps you pull together and maybe heal a little bit,” Elits added.

The KCKPD Chaplain, Jared Altic, said, “If we saw blue ribbons, that would make a big difference,” and added it’s an inexpensive way to show support.

As a reminder, the public is invited to a candlelight vigil for Officer Simoncic on Thursday, August 28 outside of Kansas City, Kansas City Hall. The address is 701 North Seventh Street, KCK at 7:30 p.m.

The police department will share parking with Memorial Hall and within the Health Department parking lots.

Officer Simoncic’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, at Children’s Mercy Park. The address is 1 Sporting Way, KCK, 66109.

The service is open to the public and will begin at 10 a.m.
