Adoptable dogs are available through Paws Humane Society and its animal services division, which was formerly Columbus Animal Care and Control. Photos and information about dogs including age, weight, breed and more can be found through the Paws website.
According to shelter staff, although you can fill out an application online, it may be faster to start the process at the shelter in person. If you start the application process online, Paws Humane Executive Director Courtney Pierce says staff usually try to respond within 24 hours, but are adoptions first come, first serve and must be completed in-shelter.
Potential pet parents should be aware that foster dogs listed on the Paws foster page may not be immediately adoptable. Some of them may be waiting to be eligible for spay and neuter appointments. They may also be a part of the shelter’s foster-to-adopt program, which allows families to do a “test-run” with pets if they are not totally sure about adoption.
Pierce says the shelter is hoping for as many successful adoptions as possible before the end of August. Paws has a “pay what you want” policy through the end of August, allowing adoptions for as little as $1.
The shelter is also waiving impound fees for missing pets and working to ensure access to affordable spay and neuter services. Pierce says making sure your animals get fixed is key for creating a long-term solution to the shelter crisis.
