What are some tailgate foods people eat in Louisiana?

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Tailgating season in Louisiana has arrived.

Louisiana takes its tailgates seriously, there is always food, drinks, tents and people ready to have a good time. Some might say they like to have a football party more than they like to watch the game.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University and Southern University and A&M College tailgates are an essential part of college football. According to Southern, over two-thirds of Jaguars fans tailgate for five or more hours before every game.

Food at tailgates is important. Here are some ideas if you are new to the Louisiana football parties.

Boudin

Is it a Louisiana tailgate without boudin? If you are tailgating in Baton Rouge, then you won’t have a problem finding any as a last-minute addition to the food containers. Boudin Shack on Nicholson is a 10-minute drive from LSU.

Deviled eggs

Deviled eggs aren’t just for Thanksgiving; it is also an appetizer for tailgate parties. Make batches of deviled eggs with your family and watch them disappear as soon as the game starts.

Hamburgers and hot dogs

A tailgate party is the grill master’s time to shine. Hamburgers and hot dogs are easy to make and can be eaten throughout the game. LSU and Southern have guidelines for cooking sites on campus.

Jambalaya

Jambalaya’s scent alone can summarize Louisiana tailgating. The popular dish can feed a lot of people and it’s easy to make. Many places serve jambalaya around Baton Rouge including Rice & Roux on O’Neal Lane.

Raising Cane’s chicken fingers

Raising Cane’s has six different tailgate orders depending on the size of your party. The 300 Finger Tailgate includes 99 Cane’s sauces. Order here.

Red beans and rice

Red beans and rice are another dish that can be prepared before the game and still taste fresh when served at a tailgate. Like gumbo, it can be made in a large pot and feeds a lot of people.
