Bernard said that over the past year, drug task forces in the Northern District of West Virginia have seized 27 kilograms of fentanyl, 22 kilograms of methamphetamine and 13 kilograms of cocaine. Bernard noted that the seizures come in the wake of President Trump’s “Operation: Take America Back,” which he said aims to eliminate drug cartels, reduce violent crime and end illegal immigration.
“If we save one life, if we say one community, it’s worth it. And when we’re talking about 27 kg of fentanyl being taken off the streets of the Northern District of West Virginia within the last year, I can’t even begin to explain how deadly that is,” Bernard said.
The drug seizures were the result of efforts from nine drug task forces in the area, which are as follows:
Bernard told 12 News that he estimates law enforcement has arrested as many as 200 individuals in the process of these seizures.
During the press conference, Bernard highlighted the case of Daniela Marie Giancoli and Michael Matthews of Baltimore, who distributed drugs to dealers in Grant County. Marie and Matthews were arrested and sentenced to a combined 250 months in prison, with more than 9,000 fentanyl capsules seized during the investigation.
