Topeka City Council votes on property tax rates

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka City Council voted Tuesday to exceed the city’s revenue neutral rate, but still taxing property at the same rate as before.

The city voted to set a mill levy tax of 36.956 mills, still exceeding a revenue neutral rate of 35.183 mills, but is the same rate currently in place. The resolution allows the city to secure funding to maintain services, but could also mean higher property taxes after higher appraisals.

On the other hand, the Topeka City Council voted against exceeding the revenue neutral rate on behalf of the Topeka Metro Transit Authority. A failed resolution would have increased the tax rate past to 4.2 mills, past the revenue neutral rate of 3.999.
