Spotify Launches Direct Messaging for Music Sharing, Raising Security Concerns

Spotify’s new Messages feature brings sharing and conversation into the app, enabling Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets to recommend music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly to friends and family.

This dedicated space for word-of-mouth discovery centralizes conversations around content, driving engagement for users and expanding reach for creators.

Seamless Sharing and Conversation

Recommendations are the lifeblood of music discovery, with users sharing Spotify content millions of times each month.

Messages builds on this behavior by providing one-on-one chats where users can:

  • Share any track, podcast, or audiobook from the Now Playing view.
  • React with emojis and text to spark discussion.
  • Manage message requests by accepting or rejecting contacts.

To start a conversation, tap the share icon in the Now Playing view, select a friend you’ve previously interacted with—such as through collaborative playlists, Jams, or family plans—and send.

Incoming requests appear in your profile menu; once accepted, chats unfold seamlessly alongside your listening experience.

Suggested contacts surface based on prior sharing history, Duo or Family plans, and collaborative sessions.

Enhanced Discovery for Artists and Creators

By embedding sharing into the Spotify app, Messages unlocks new avenues for organic promotion.

As friends and family recommend content, creators benefit from increased visibility and sustained engagement.

The streamlined flow—without leaving Spotify—means less friction and more frequent recommendations, ultimately fueling listener growth and retention.

Feature Description
In-App Chat One-on-one conversations with text and emoji reactions.
Content Sharing Share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly from Now Playing or profile menus.
Suggested Contacts Automates friend suggestions based on prior interactions, collaborative playlists, and plans.

User Control and Safety Measures

Spotify places users in the driver’s seat. Message requests can be approved or declined, and any unwanted communications can be blocked or reported by long-pressing the message and selecting “Report.”

All messages adhere to Spotify’s Terms of Use and Platform Rules, with industry-standard encryption protecting data at rest and in transit.

Proactive detection technology scans for unlawful or harmful content, with moderators reviewing reports to maintain a safe environment.
