Matthew Bahlinger, a member of the LSU Tiger Marching Band, struggled with depression for six to seven years before his death. Despite receiving therapy, he felt he was not getting the help he needed. His parents, determined to prevent similar tragedies, have worked with the LSU Foundation and other partners to establish a full-time therapist within the band and music department.
“He just was big-hearted and he cared,” said Alice Bahlinger, reflecting on her son’s desire for justice and fairness.
“It’s one of the first things we did with the student health center, was QPR training, Question, Persuade, Refer,” said Gerald Bahlinger, emphasizing the importance of suicide prevention training.
Matthew Bahlinger had a warm smile that brought comfort to those around him, yet he struggled with depression since high school. His parents were aware of his troubles and had lunch and dinner with him the day before his death.
Matthew’s struggle with finding the right therapist was a significant challenge. He was seeing a therapist at the time of his death, but felt that his concerns were not adequately addressed.
The Bahlingers’ initiative includes funding a full-time therapist for the LSU band and music department, announced during a fundraiser event called Matt’s Dinner. This effort aims to provide accessible mental health support to students.
The QPR training, which stands for Question, Persuade, Refer, is part of the mental health initiative. It is designed to equip individuals with the skills to identify and address suicidal thoughts in others.
Mary Bahlinger, Matthew’s sister, expressed the impact of losing her brother, stating, “I never thought I would be living my life without my brother… feels good to help others like he needed help at that time.”
Through their efforts, the Bahlingers hope to create a supportive environment for LSU students and prevent future tragedies. Their dedication to mental health awareness continues to resonate within the community.
