DALLAS (KDAF) — The Frontiers of Flight Museum recently announced the opening of a new exhibit celebrating the extraordinary life and legacy of Bessie Coleman, the first Black person to earn a pilot’s license and the first American woman to earn an international pilot’s license.

The exhibit, sponsored by Microsoft and made possible through the support of patron Raamel Mitchell and Family, highlights Coleman’s tenacity, courage, and groundbreaking achievements in aviation. Visitors will experience her story through a vibrant digital experience, accessible in multiple languages via mobile devices, allowing guests from around the world to connect with Coleman’s inspiring journey in their own words.

Central to the exhibit is the Curtiss “Jenny” aircraft, Coleman’s favorite of the two planes she owned, which hangs prominently from the museum’s hangar ceiling. As a token takeaway of the experience and to continue learning more about Coleman’s story, there are educational programs, books, dolls, apparel, and other items available in the new Frontiers of Flight Museum store. A portion of the proceeds from these items will fund scholarships for girls from South Dallas to attend summer camp, extending Coleman’s legacy of creating opportunities for future generations.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1892, Coleman overcame significant racial and gender discrimination during her lifetime. After being denied flight training in the United States, she traveled to France, where she earned her pilot’s license in 1921. She went on to captivate audiences as a stunt pilot and dreamed of opening a flight school for African American aviators, a vision tragically cut short by her death during a 1926 air show rehearsal. Today, her life story continues to inspire generations across the globe.

The exhibit is included with regular museum admission; no special ticket is required. The Frontiers of Flight Museum is located at 6911 Lemmon Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75209. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth ages three to 12, $10 for seniors 65 and up, and children two and under are free.
