In-home daycare catches fire in Brownsburg

BROWNSBURG, Ind. — Crews responded early Wednesday morning to a fire at an in-home daycare in Brownsburg.

According to the Brownsburg Fire Territory, firefighters were dispatched around 3:22 a.m. to the 10400 block of Ballard Drive for a reported house fire.

Firefighters confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that the residence houses an in-home daycare called Clover Kids Preschool.

The homeowner wasn’t inside at the time because she’d left to go to the emergency room for a health issue. Her older son left work to come watch her 9-year-old daughter while she was away. The homeowner was gone for only a few minutes when the flames erupted. The daughter reported hearing a loud boom around 3 a.m.

The homeowner’s bedroom bore the brunt of the damage. The homeowner said she would’ve likely died or been seriously injured if she hadn’t left for a medical emergency.

The family doesn’t know what caused the sound. However, they did report smelling smoke earlier in the day but believed that was from someone burning trash nearby. They believe it’s possible the fire may be electrical in nature.

No one was hurt. The homeowner and her family will stay with her mother on the north side for the time being.

The entire roof of the house is gone, officials said, and a large amount of debris fell into the home. Firefighters spent more than three hours containing hot spots.

Investigators are still working to find out the cause. Firefighters from Pike Township and Avon assisted with the response.
