GONZALES, La. (Louisiana First) — After weeks of gridlock, the City of Gonzales finally has a new budget in place. City leaders approved a $22 million spending plan on Monday, allowing operations to move forward for the first time since mid-July.
Mayor Timothy “Tim” Riley said the amended budget opens the door for progress while still reflecting his long-term vision for the city.
“I’m of the mindset I want to leave things better,” Riley said.
The mayor originally pushed for the addition of several new positions, including an HR clerk, business license clerk, warehouse clerk, and purchasing manager. Riley said those roles are still part of his plan, even though they weren’t included in the approved version of the budget.
“As of right now, those positions are still there,” Riley explained.
Riley believes adding staff will improve efficiency at City Hall and help Gonzales manage the growth it is already experiencing.
“We’re doing well, and we expect more business to be attracted to Gonzales. It’s just where we are right now. It’s an economic boom that’s happening in Gonzales,” he said.
For now, the mayor said the focus of the new budget is on day-to-day operations and ensuring the city and the next administration have the resources needed to serve residents.
“I want to give others the opportunity to sit here one day as well, and I want them to have the liberty and the freedoms to be able to run city government efficiently and effectively,” Riley said.
With a budget finally in place, Riley said the priority is getting back to business for residents. He is carefully reviewing all aspects of the plan and expects to provide an update in September outlining the next steps for Gonzales.
