
On August 24, 2025, Lieutenant James Herbert was off-duty and participating in the Seedorf/McMeekin Memorial 5K run. Police say Lt Herbert observed 27-year-old Xontae Glass holding his wife in a headlock and pulling her towards the underside of the Boardwalk Lieutenant Herbert immediately intervened.
Lieutenant Herbert followed Glass and the woman onto the Boardwalk while waiting for police officers to respond. It was during this time that Herbert and the suspect got into a physical altercation.
During the altercation, Glass pulled out a pocketknife and threatened Lieutenant Herbert with the weapon. Off-duty Captain of Northfield’s Police Department, Scott Pollak, witnessed the incident. When the suspect brandished the knife and advanced on Lieutenant Herbert, Captain Pollak retrieved his off-duty weapon and gave verbal commands to Glass, who began to retreat, dropped the knife, and ultimately ran off the Boardwalk at New York Avenue.
Xontae Glass is facing multiple charges including simple assault, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
