Abilene streets: What $7 million will fix

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Abilene city leaders face a tough balance: $110 million worth of street projects are on the list, but only $7 million is available to spend.

A spokesperson told council members that full-depth street rehabilitation typically lasts 15 to 25 years with proper maintenance. However, repair costs continue to rise, about 3.5 to 4% each year.

Among the roads up for consideration, Barrow Street was a common name for needed repairs, while the College Heights area, one of the oldest on the list, was prioritized.

Approved projects include:

  • College Heights – $2.4 million
  • SoDA District (preventative maintenance) – $1.1 million
  • 25th Street, Ross to Buffalo Gap – $330,000
  • Barrow Street, South 2nd to South 11th – $3.7 million
  • Contingency project: Lone Star Drive (preventative maintenance)

The funds passed unanimously.
