5-year-old boy dies in suspected accidental shooting on Chicago’s South Side

CHICAGO (WGN) — A five-year-old boy died after a suspected accidental shooting in an apartment on the South Side of Chicago Sunday afternoon.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue in the North Kenwood neighborhood just after 1:15 p.m.

The boy was inside the apartment when he sustained a gunshot wound to the head, police say. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Pastor Donovan Price, who spent the afternoon with the family at the hospital, says the shooting was allegedly accidental.

“Self-inflicted. Got a hold of a gun, which is just something we need to work on,” Price said. “Gun locks, gun boxes. When you have small children, you have to make a decision on how secure you’re going to keep your weapons at all times.”

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police say. No charges have been filed at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
