
According to officers, a white Dodge Hellcat was traveling on Interstate 81 without headlights, and they attempted to pull the car over.
Officials say the driver refused to pull over and started accelerating at a high speed heading north on Interstate 77.
The driver entered the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel at high speeds while workers were in the area, which caused extreme risks to public safety, officials say.
Virginia State Police assisted in the incident, and the pursuit continued to Bland County. Police say the car crashed into a guardrail at the 64-mile marker.
The two men occupying the vehicle fled on foot until they were taken into custody.
According to officials, the car was stolen from Charlotte, North Carolina.
The driver was identified as Jiaair James Henry of Lower Sandusky, Ohio, and is a fugitive from Texas for Assault – Suffocation.
Henry has been charged with the following:
- Driving Suspended
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with Expired Registration
- Altering a License Plate
- Obscuring a License Plate
- Operating a Vehicle on a Highway with No Headlights
- Operating a Vehicle with No Taillights
- Reckless Driving
- Felony Eluding Police
- Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
- Possession of Schedule I or II Drugs
The passenger was identified as Jaylon De’Shawn Gear of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been charged with:
- Misdemeanor Eluding Police
- Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
- Possession of Schedule I or II Drugs
The officer also said they found suspected oxycodone inside the vehicle.
