Tennessee Head Coach Josh Heupel’s contract extended through 2030

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — University of Tennessee’s head coach for football is set to say in Rocky Top until at least the start of 2030.

On Tuesday, the university announced that coach Josh Heupel’s contract had been extended through January 2030, after he led Tennessee football to its winningest three-year stretch in more than two decades.

During his time at Tennessee, Heupel has produced a 37-15 records with 11 victories over Top 25 teams, as well as the school’s first College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six appearances. His .712 winning percentage is the second-highest of any Vol coach during the last five decades.

“The revival of our football program under Josh’s leadership has made everyone in Big Orange Country proud to be a Vol,” White said. “Josh has brought Tennessee Football back to its rightful place among the nation’s elite programs, and he and his staff have fostered a positive culture within the team. Our commitment to supporting Josh and his staff remains strong and unwavering.”

Tennessee’s record before Heupel arrived at 3-7. However, Heupel took over the program and rebuilt its culture, amid a period where the school faced sanctions from the NCAA over multiple violations that happened under former head coach Jeremy Pruitt.

“We took over a program in 2021 during a turbulent time. We quickly built a resilient, player-driven culture and have enjoyed great success on and off the field, but there is still much left to do. I am excited about the future of Tennessee Football, and I can’t wait to run through the T once again with Vol Nation proudly supporting us,” Heupel said.

Since then, Tennessee has finished ahead of where it was projected to in the SEC media poll three out of four years, and Heupel has the third most wins for a UT coach through the first four full seasons, falling behind Bill Battle (39 from 1970-73) and Phillip Fulmer (38 from 1993-96).

The news of Heupel’s contract extension comes as the Vols prepare to face Syracuse for their first game of the 2025 season in Atlanta, Georgia. The game on Saturday, August 30, is set to begin at noon and will be broadcast on 6 News.

Although Tennessee did not release the exact details of Heupel’s compensation under the contract extension, when his contract was extended in 2023, he was set to have an annual compensation of more than $8.7 million per year, plus incentives. That contract was set to expire in January 2029.
