The fire department announced his passing on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Raywick Fire Department announces the passing of Lieutenant Brian Hatt, a dedicated firefighter, colleague, and friend. Lieutenant Hatt passed away on August 25th, 2025, at 3:49 p.m., surrounded by his loving family and his brothers and sisters of the Raywick Fire Department,” the department wrote.
An initial investigation by state police showed that the tanker truck dropped off the right shoulder of the road, causing the “edge of the roadway to collapse” and the tanker to overturn. Hatt was reportedly ejected from the truck, and another firefighter was trapped inside.
According to the Raywick Fire Department, Hatt was a 12-year veteran of the department.
“Lieutenant Hatt was more than a firefighter—he was family to all of us at the Raywick Fire Department,” Chief of the Raywick Fire Department Herman Riggs said. “His legacy of service and sacrifice will live on in the department and in the hearts of the community he so selflessly served.”
An update on the other firefighter’s condition wasn’t immediately available.
