NOPD believes body found in New Orleans East marsh is missing 12-year-old

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A body has been found in a New Orleans East lagoon on Tuesday, Aug. 26, according to sources.

Sources told WGNO that the discovery was made near the search site for 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez, who was reported missing over a week ago.

In a news conference held by New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, she said it was the efforts done by the non profit organization, the Cajun Navy, that led to the discovery.

“This is in deed a profoundly sad day but a day for some closure. We believe we have found Bryan Vasquez in the marsh,” said Kirkpatrick. “We personally thank the Cajun Navy. They have been out here tirelessly.”

Cajun Navy officials stated that on Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, they deployed a thermal drone that helped them pinpoint the location.

Vasquez, who was non-verbal with a a neurodevelopmental condition, was first reported missing by his mother at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14.

He was seen on doorbell footage in the area, outside wearing just an adult diaper. Kirkpatrick says the investigation has now switched to a death investigation.

The City of New Orleans is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bryan Vasquez, a beloved child whose life, though far too short, left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Bryan was a bright, charismatic, and energetic young boy whose joy and spirit touched the lives of his family, friends, and community.

The City also extends its gratitude to the New Orleans Police Department, the Cajun Navy, and all agencies and volunteers who came together to support the Vasquez family during this difficult time.

Bryan’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him, and his light will continue to shine as a reminder of resilience, innocence, and love.

May he rest in God’s eternal peace.
