A massive hammerhead shark was discovered around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday near the northern end of Carolina Beach near the Clamshell access, according to Abby Grace Hollingsworth.
The hammerhead shark appeared to be about 12 feet long — with a man lying on the beach beside it to provide scale. Carolina Beach is located in New Hanover County, about five miles south of Wilmington.
It’s not known when the shark died.
Staff from the North Carolina Aquarium arrived at Carolina Beach on Tuesday, Hollingsworth told CBS 17.
Crews removed the shark and plan to check for the cause of death.
Hurricane Erin brought massive waves, high surf and strong currents to the North Carolina coast last week, and bad weather continued along beaches through Sunday.
