“Suddenly, I realized there was a helicopter that kept circling around the area, and I could tell from that they appeared to be looking for something,” said Rick Thames, who lives in Belmont.

That was Thames’ first clue that something was happening in his Belmont neighborhood Monday morning.
“We started seeing police cars coming to the area, and I’d say there were maybe at least 15 cars here,” he said. “They set up sort of a temporary command post.”
One of his neighbors took a video on his cell phone showing Mayapple Way lined with police cars and officers in tactical gear carrying guns walking along one of the neighborhood trails.
“I called the police department, and they said yeah, there’s something happening,” said Thames. “We have a situation and we need you to shelter in place.”
At first, investigators didn’t give specifics on what was happening. After the incident was resolved, they shared that there was an armed person with outstanding warrants on a boat near Catawba Cove Drive.
No one was hurt, and that man is now in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police custody. His identity hasn’t been made public.
