Man arrested for breaking in, releasing dogs at Austin Pets Alive!

AUSTIN (KXAN) —  Jacob G. Bender, 38, was arrested for allegedly breaking into Town Lake Animal Center and releasing most of the dogs from their kennels, according to the Austin Police Department. He is now facing criminal trespass charges.

As a result of the incident, one dog died and at least five dogs sustained injuries. Austin Pets Alive! said all the missing dogs were found and accounted for.

Attorney information was not listed for Bender, as of Monday. We will update this if that changes.

The break-in occurred around 1.20 a.m. on Aug. 14. However, officers were not notified of the incident for hours.

According to Austin police, officers responded to a burglary urgent call at APA! around 5:19 a.m. Staff later arrived at the facility, secured the animals and returned them to their enclosures.

This case is under investigation by the Animal Cruelty Unit. According to APD, Bender may face additional charges.
