LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A Friday federal court filing would add Conway schools to the lawsuit opposing the law for the display of the 10 Commandments in Arkansas classrooms.
The lawsuit has led to an Aug. 4 temporary injunction preventing the 10 Commandments in the Fayetteville, Springdale, Bentonville and Siloam Springs School Districts pending the suit going to trial. Parents in those districts felt Act 573 of 2025 was an unfair effort to indoctrinate their children.
The Friday filing asks to amend the complaint of the original suit. It was filed on behalf of the Conway parents, who went to an open house at their child’s school and saw the 10 Commandments posted in classrooms.
It cites a letter from the Conway School District’s lawyer telling Conway principals the Aug. 4 ruling does not bind them and that schools in the district must display the 10 Commandments.
The Conway parents argue that this is the same violation of rights the northwest Arkansas parents are facing.
The suit states that the families who are atheist, Jewish, Unitarian Universalists, Humanists, agnostic and a household led by an atheist who is a former Mormon are being forced to observe religious doctrine they do not subscribe to or wish to push on their children.
Supporters of the 10 Commandments cite it as a historical document.
