According to the Louisiana State Police (LSP), the incident happened on Sunday, August 24, on Interstate 49 near Louisiana Highway 509. The DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office reported on their Facebook page that deputies received a call around 3:29 p.m. about a vehicle driving recklessly in the northbound lanes of I-49. Shortly afterward, officers located the vehicle, which was confirmed to be stolen.
After the driver refused to stop, a pursuit ensued. The suspect eventually stopped on an embankment and exited the vehicle with a handgun. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver exchanged gunfire with the deputies before fleeing on foot, but he eventually succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No deputies were harmed during the incident.
Officers say the suspect was wanted in Beauregard Parish, where he allegedly stole a different vehicle earlier that same day.
The suspect’s name has not been released at this time.
