UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A man from Illinois accused of a deadly shooting in New York earlier this year rejected a plea deal in Oneida County Court on Monday.

On Monday, Aug. 25, 32-year-old Darius Steward rejected a plea deal of 20 years to life in state prison for the shooting death of Omar Mitchell.

Utica Police received a ShotSpotter notification on Tuesday, April 22 near the intersection of Kemble and Walker Street in the Cornhill neighborhood. When officers arrived at the scene, they spotted a vehicle fleeing the scene. It was later revealed that Mitchell was in that vehicle.

Mitchell was transported to the Wynn Hospital in Utica where he eventually died from his injuries. Steward was eventually identified by officers as the suspect after a month-long investigation and found by police in Springfield, Ill. in early June.

Steward was returned to New York on Monday, June 23, where he awaited trial in the Oneida County Jail.

Steward is being charged with second-degree murder, a Class A-I felony, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C violent felony.

A court date for motion arguments in Oneida County Court is set for Friday, Sept. 19.
